Here is where Pacific Northwest homeowners need to read carefully, because nearly all rubberized-shingle marketing is aimed at a problem we do not have.
The headline benefit these products advertise is impact resistance — specifically hail. Polymer-modified asphalt absorbs and deflects impact rather than fracturing, which earns high UL 2218 impact ratings, and in hail-prone states those ratings often unlock meaningful homeowners insurance discounts.
Western Washington gets very little hail. Damaging hail events are a Colorado, Texas, and Midwest problem. So the single most-promoted benefit of rubberized shingles is close to irrelevant on the Eastside, and any insurance discount tied to impact rating is unlikely to apply the way it would in hail country. It is worth asking your carrier rather than assuming.
A note on ratings: published impact classifications for specific Malarkey lines vary between sources, with some listing Vista at Class 4 and third-party testing directories listing it at Class 3. If impact rating matters for your decision, ask your contractor for the current technical data sheet rather than relying on any article, this one included.

Vista AR and comparable algae-resistant products carry an algae warranty — commonly 25 years on the AR line. Read the warranty language and you will find it applies specifically to blue-green algae, and it expressly excludes all other forms of algae, mold, mildew, lichens, moss, or other biological growth.
Algae is the dark streaking common in humid heat. Moss is the thick green mat that grows on shaded Pacific Northwest roofs and physically lifts shingle edges. They are different organisms, and the warranty covering one does not cover the other.
So an algae-resistant shingle is a fine thing to have, and it will do nothing about your moss problem. Moss still requires treatment and maintenance regardless of what you install. Anyone implying otherwise is misreading the warranty.
Within Malarkey's architectural range, Highlander is the entry-level option, Vista sits above it and is described by the manufacturer as slightly thicker, and Legacy sits above Vista as the thicker, higher-performing line. Vista AR adds algae-resistant granules.
All of them use the NEX polymer-modified asphalt, so the core flexibility benefit is present across the range. Moving up the line generally buys additional thickness, longer non-prorated warranty periods, and in some cases higher impact classification.
Malarkey shingles also incorporate upcycled rubber and plastics and smog-reducing granules, which matters to some homeowners and not to others. It is a genuine differentiator, not a claim we can independently verify the environmental impact of.
Honest answer: it depends on your site and how long you plan to stay.
Stronger case for it if your roof has significant wind exposure, if you have watched a previous roof fail early from granule loss, if you intend to stay in the home long-term, or if you want the best available protection against the cold-flex cycling our winters produce.
Weaker case if you are selling within a few years, if the roof is sheltered and low-exposure, or if the upgrade cost would push you into financing you would rather avoid. A properly installed standard architectural shingle on a well-ventilated, well-maintained roof performs perfectly well here.
And the thing that matters more than either choice: installation quality and ventilation. A premium shingle installed with under-driven nails over a poorly ventilated attic will not outperform a mid-grade shingle installed correctly. We would rather see a homeowner spend on correct flashing details and proper attic ventilation than on a material upgrade over a compromised system.
